OTTAWA - The federal New Democrats are asking a parliamentary committee to look into political appointments to the new Social Security Tribunal.

New Democrat MP Chris Charlton put forward a motion Wednesday asking the human-resources committee to examine the qualifications of several appointees with Conservative ties.

Ms. Chris Charlton (Hamilton Mountain, NDP): Mr. Speaker, maybe the Prime Minister should not have left the country. I think this may be the first time that two Conservatives are not on the same page with respect to their talking points. I asked the member for Calgary Northeast about the details of the Canada jobs grant and he said that he was still out there consulting. Yet, the Minister of Labour just said that she was really excited about this program. She must know some details that the member for Calgary Northeast does not.

A heated committee meeting on reforms to the temporary foreign worker program Tuesday highlighted division among industry, labor and government on the file, exposing the complexities of the program and the difficulty in striking a balance that satisfies stakeholders.

Ms. Chris Charlton (Hamilton Mountain, NDP):  Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to rise in the House this afternoon to move concurrence in the ninth report of the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Skills and Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities presented on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, with respect to labour and skills shortages in Canada. The subtitle of the report is “Addressing Current and Future Challenges”.
